About the product
Allegra Allergy 24 Hour is an over-the-counter antihistamine tablet used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies (hay fever) and other upper respiratory allergies. It contains 180 mg of fexofenadine hydrochloride per tablet and is marketed as the #1 allergist-recommended non-drowsy OTC allergy brand. It's owned by Haleon and sold worldwide.
Allegra Allergy 24 Hour relieves sneezing, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, and itchy nose or throat caused by hay fever or other upper respiratory allergies. It also treats skin itching and hives associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and children at least 6 years old.
Allegra starts working within one hour of taking it and provides relief for up to 24 hours with a single dose.
The 24 Hour line is available as film-coated tablets and gelcaps, both containing 180 mg of fexofenadine. A 12 Hour version (60 mg) is also available for twice-daily dosing. There is also an Allegra-D formulation that adds pseudoephedrine for added nasal congestion relief.
Ingredients
The active ingredient is fexofenadine hydrochloride (180 mg per tablet). Fexofenadine is a second-generation antihistamine that blocks histamine receptors to reduce allergy symptoms. Importantly, it does not cross the blood-brain barrier, which is why it doesn't cause the drowsiness associated with older antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl).
The tablets contain povidone, pregelatinized starch, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, and iron oxide blends. These help bind, coat, color, and ensure smooth manufacturing of each tablet — none are active medicinal ingredients.
Yes, Allegra Allergy 24 Hour tablets are lactose-free.
Some formulations of fexofenadine products may contain phenylalanine, which can be harmful to people with phenylketonuria (PKU). Always check the specific product label if you have PKU, and consult your doctor or pharmacist before use.
Usage & safety
Adults and children 12 years of age and older: take one 180 mg tablet with water once daily. Do not take more than one tablet in a 24-hour period. Children under 12 should not use this product. Adults 65 and older should check with a doctor before use.
No. Do not take Allegra Allergy 24 Hour with fruit juice — particularly apple, orange, or grapefruit juice. Fruit juice can reduce the absorption of fexofenadine and make the medication less effective. Always take it with water.
Fexofenadine does not cross the blood-brain barrier, meaning it acts on histamine receptors in the body without affecting the brain. This is what Allegra calls "0% brain interference" — the medication relieves peripheral allergy symptoms without causing the sedation typical of first-generation antihistamines.
No. Always stick to the recommended dose of one tablet per 24 hours. Taking more will not speed up or enhance the effects, and exceeding the recommended dose is not advised.
Do not use Allegra Allergy 24 Hour if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it or any of its ingredients. People with kidney disease should consult a doctor before use, as dosage adjustments may be needed. Children under 12 should not use the adult 24 Hour formula.
Consult a healthcare professional before using Allegra if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your provider can help weigh the potential benefits and risks for your specific situation.
Stop use and seek medical attention if you have an allergic reaction to the product, your symptoms do not improve within 7 days or are accompanied by a fever, or you experience signs of an ear infection. In case of an overdose, contact Poison Control or emergency services immediately.
Yes, in many cases you can. Thanks to the CARES Act, certain OTC products including Allegra may be eligible for purchase with HSA or FSA funds. Save your receipt and check with your benefits provider to confirm eligibility for your specific plan.
